Otilia Ionela

Hello, my name is Otilia Ionela, and I am an abstract expressionist painter and mixed media artist. Although I hold a degree in economics, art has always been the language through which I understand the world and express my inner experiences. For the past 20 years, painting has not been just a creative outlet for me—it has been a way of life, a daily act of connection with myself and with something larger than myself.

My artistic journey began privately, as a quiet, personal exploration, but over time it evolved into a public dialogue. I’ve had the honor of exhibiting my works in numerous galleries both in Romania and internationally. Each exhibition has been a new opportunity to connect with viewers on an emotional level and to open a window into a deeply personal, yet universally human, space.

My primary medium is acrylic on canvas, but over the years I’ve developed a strong interest in using recycled materials in my creations. I often integrate small objects—fragments of metal, fabric, plastic, and paper—into my compositions, transforming them into miniature installations directly on the canvas. I’m fascinated by the tension between chaos and order, between discarded materials and intentional artistic gesture. There’s something healing about giving a second life to what others might consider waste.

The style I work in is best described as abstract expressionism. I let emotion guide my brush, allowing color, texture, and shape to form intuitively rather than through strict planning. My canvases are often vibrant, layered, and full of contrast. I’m not looking to depict a scene or tell a literal story—I want to evoke feeling, provoke reflection, and invite the viewer into an inner journey of their own.

My artistic process is raw and instinctive. I don’t always know what a piece will become when I begin, and that’s exactly what keeps it alive for me. The act of painting is, for me, a ritual—a space where I can be completely honest, spontaneous, and free from expectations. I believe that abstract art, at its best, reflects the complexity of human experience in ways that words cannot.

Beyond the studio, I’m passionate about sustainability and the role that art can play in shifting perspectives. By using recycled materials in my work, I hope to not only create visually compelling pieces, but also raise awareness about the beauty that can be found in reuse, in imperfection, and in the everyday objects we so often overlook.

Art, for me, has never been separate from life. It’s present in the way I observe, in the way I move through space, in the way I respond to light, shadow, and silence. It’s how I process joy, loss, transformation, and hope.

I’m continuously inspired by texture, movement, nature, urban decay, and fleeting moments of emotion. I believe that beauty doesn’t always have to be clean or polished—it can be raw, messy, and full of contradiction.

As I continue to grow and evolve as an artist, I remain deeply committed to this path of exploration and authenticity. I hope my work speaks to something essential in those who view it—something that goes beyond explanation and reaches directly into feeling.
